Pretty Rectangles

This task involves students in the processes of data collection and analysis to determine whether some rectangles are “prettier” than others. The data involves rectangles with side lengths of different proportions. The lesson below describes more about how to implement this task with students. The first page of the backline master at the very bottom can be provided to students to use as they collect data.

This is an interesting activity to follow the Fibonacci lessons (How Many Ways Maze?, Male and Female Bees, and Stair Master) since it involves the Golden Ratio – a strong connection to the Fibonacci sequence.
